The western redcedar (thuja plicata) is a standout in the snowy woods. They often grow by themselves among thick stands of hemlock and Douglas-fir. Cedars grow slowly, often outliving their companions. In the Olympic rain forests they can live 1,000 years and grow 20 feet in diameter.
