Early settlers described this area as a dry and dusty place that was inhabited by Garry Oaks and cactus. This is because it lies in the center of the rain shadow of the Olympic Mountains...
While annual precipitation may be 200 inches in the highest mountains, Sequim averages 15. In 1896 the first irrigation ditch brought water from the Dungeness River and the dry Prairie became home to hundreds of dairy farms. Today the unusual climate of this green valley is proving attractive to retirees and the farms are becoming choice building sites for retirement homes.
