The Lighthouse on Dungeness Spit has the distinction of being the first American light to go into service north of the Columbia River. The original tower was 89 feet high. But in the 1920s it developed cracks and was lowered to its present height of 63 feet. It was built near the end of the spit in 1857, but today, some 150 years later, it is a full half mile from the end because the spit, the longest in the world, continues to grow.
