In temperate rain forests of the Olympics bigleaf maples play host to luxurious curtains of moss. These epiphytes, (plants that live upon other plants), can weigh more than the tree’s own foliage. Other than the extra weight, they do no harm to their hosts. Mosses in general are like sponges. They can hold a great quantity of water and play key roles in water retention and erosion control.
