The Valley of the Dungeness is on an alluvial fan created by the outflow from the Dungeness River at the end of the last ice age. When early settlers came in the 1850s it was largely forested with old growth douglas-fir and cedar...
Farms were gradually carved out of these forests and a thriving dairy industry eventually developed. Lying as it does in the rain shadow from the Olympics Mountains, irrigation was essential. The Dungeness River was tapped for this purpose in 1896. Today the farms are giving way to building sites for retirement homes and the unique amenities of this special place are being enjoyed by many more people.
